Religious Institutions
The
present First Presbyterian Church grew from a Sunday School
organized in 1900 was housed, at first, in a land office and later in a
butcher shop. Preaching services were held there while the
congregation sat on planks placed over kegs of fish and pickles.
This was the first church building in Wilton and is currently located at
401 Dakota Avenue. Worship services are held on Sundays at 11:00 a.m.
and Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m.
The
St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church
was built in 1890 in the country northeast of Wilton. The Church was
moved to its present site at 300 North 7th Street in 1911 by the Ukrainian
families who came to homestead, and also for the miners who worked in the
coal mines in the early 1900's. The Ukrainian Catholic Church
acknowledges the authority of the Pope of Rome, but it employs the
Byzantine rites, while the Roman Church uses the Latin rites.
Services are held on Sundays with confession at 9:30 a.m. and Divine
Liturgy at 10:00 a.m.
The
Mission Evangelical Free Church can trace its roots back to
a group of Swedish immigrants who settled just east of Wilton in the late
1800's. This group of believers began meeting in homes and built
their first church in 1898 at a site five miles east of Wilton. They
later sold the building and built another in 1915. Soon after the
country church became too small and the members built its present day
church located at 700 7th St. North. Services are held on Sundays
at 11:00 a.m. with Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. There is an evening
service on Sundays at 7:00 p.m.
One
of the landmarks of Wilton is the Holy Trinity Ukranian Orthodox
Church built by the Ukrainians who fled from Russia in search of
freedom long before the communist revolution. The church was built
in the early 1900's and consists of a cruciform building with three
steeples each bearing the Greek schismatic cross, symbolic of the Trinity,
with the lowest part set obliquely to denote the Church has divested
itself of papal authority. Though closed most of the year, pastors
come once a month from Minot to conduct a service at the church from June
through August and for an occasional funeral.
The Roman Catholic Church has always been a part of Wilton and the
community. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church was built
in the summer of 1906 and was originally located on Railroad Street and
Bismarck Avenue. In 1939 it was moved to the site of the present
church on Bismarck Avenue and 4th Street. The church membership has
remained stable throughout the years. In 1959 a new church was
built, and it was in this same year the Church began to put into practice
the second Vatican Council. Mass is held every Wednesday and Friday
morning and also on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.
The
Sunne Lutheran Church is now over 100 years old and is
located southeast of Wilton. Swedish immigrants who were among the
earliest settlers in the region, some of whom had arrived 10 years
earlier. In February 1893, neighbors gathered to organize and
establish a Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Congregation and built a
church. Because so many of the 30 or so present were from Sunne,
Varmland, Sweden, the name "Sunne" was chosen for the
congregation. Services are held on Sundays at 8:30 and 11:00
a.m. Communion is the first and third Sunday of each month, and
Sunday School is at 9:45 a.m. For more information, visit www.sunnelutheran.org |
