Recreation
Wilton's
newest park is the Wilton Centennial Park.
The late Pete Elichuk had a vision of reshaping an
unattractive slough area in south Wilton into a
beautiful public park/pond. It was his vision that
inspired others, such as the Wilton Tree Board, to make
that dream a reality. The Park has a small
footbridge as well as a footpath which surrounds the
pond and then some. One can also do some fishing
here.
The Wilton Park Board maintains two other parks; the
largest park is located at the south edge of the city,
near the football field. It's a good place for
families to have reunions, picnics, etc. as the park has playground equipment, a tennis court, baseball
diamonds, a soccer field, and a Frisbee Golf
course. In the winter, the soccer field is filled
with water to create a skating rink. The other
park, which is located near the north edge of the city,
also has facilities for picnics and has several kinds of
playground equipment.
There is also a campground for RVs which provides
electrical hookups and water.
Painted
Woods Golf Course is located on Highway 83, just 10
miles north of Wilton. This beautiful course was
built in 1978 and has 9 holes. Long an area favorite,
Painted Woods offers three tees, great views, small
undulating grass greens and plenty of water to devour
misplayed golf balls.
Painted Woods Creek runs through the course and comes
into play on all of the holes of this 9-hole,
picturesque venue. For 18-holes, the course
measures 5,958 yards and plays to a par-72. You
can play all day at Painted Woods for under $20. A
shirt and shoes are required. Season runs from
late April through early October, weather
permitting. For more information, call (701)
462-8480.
New
John's Lake is located 20 miles north of
Wilton. This lake along with Heckers Lake,
provides many recreational opportunities such as
boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming.
Weekends see the most activity with campers arriving on
Friday evenings and leaving on Sunday. Holidays
during the summer are especially busy. One has a
hard time finding a place to camp!
The area around Wilton offers many opportunities for hunting
and fishing. Licenses for upland game and
waterfowl can be purchased at the local Cenex
convenience store. Big game licenses have to
purchased through the ND
Game and Fish Department. |
